5 Tips for Healthy Skin this Fall

Labor Day marks the return to the grind of work and school, when our stress levels rise, and the Fall weather slowly changes to cooler and drier air. These temperature changes can wreak havoc on skin, as can the uptick in stress.

Chronic stress creates inflammation, which leads to visible signs of aging, such as sagging, wrinkles, blemishes, and recess. But don’t stress about your stress. That’s so not helpful. I’ll share a tip below for that.

I tend to explore radiance through 2 lenses: nutrition and skincare. In the same way that your body craves different foods in the different seasons, so does your skin. The bounty of fresh foods harvested in the Fall address seasonal concerns like dryness as well as nourishing sun damaged skin. They are nature’s intended medicine. Focus on foods like sweet potatoes, red cabbage, broccoli, chard, apple, acorn squash, and pumpkin (including seeds), daikon, and cranberries.

Just when the summer glow is draining from skin and the onset of flaky, dry skin, nails, and hair is near, these autumnal foods are amazing at helping the body restore and recharge.

Apples are powerful detoxifies and cool your body from lingering heat of summer. The apple skins defend against wrinkle-causing AGEs. Acorn Squash is high in iron. which helps to strengthen hair and nails. Chard is chock full of nutrients including biotin (vitamin B7) that keeps skin, hair, and nails strong and healthy.

As the temperatures cool and that summer glow drains from your skin, you may notice the onset of flaky, dry skin, nails, and hair. When skin starts losing moisture, the barrier can get disrupted, causing increased sensitivity, dryness, and irritation. Fall is the season to focus on renewing, moisturizing, and protecting.

5 Tips for Healthy Skin this Fall

  1. Breathe. This one may be unexpected, but reducing your stress will go a long way towards gorgeous skin. Implement any stress-reducing strategy to help. I like deep breathing because it is simple yet powerful.

  2. Hydration. Beauty starts on the inside. Drink more water. But also upgrade to more hydrating moisturizers and incorporate facial oils. If you’re making the switch to clean beauty, I’m happy to recommend the perfect moisturizer for your face. Message me.

  3. Exfoliate Less. Try a honey exfoliator. Raw honey is a natural exfoliator, removing dry, dull skin and revealing new skin cells underneath.

  4. Eye Cream. That delicate skin around your eyes is the first to feel the impact of the changing seasons, which can manifest in puffiness or fine lines. Here’s my favorite (check out the reviews!!).

  5. Add a Vitamin C Serum to combat SPF rays, even out skin pigmentation and boost collagen production. This pulls double duty in the fall. This is my top Vitamin C serum pick. Once you see the results, you’ll need fewer products, including cosmetics. It’s a game changer!

If you are packing away your shorts and flip-flops, it’s also time to update your skincare routine to match the changing weather. A change of season typically means a change in the way skin behaves. The cooler, windy weather of Fall coupled with the drying effects of heated air, mean we need to treat our skin differently to avoid dryness, breakouts, and lackluster skin. Fall is the season to focus on renewing, moisturizing, and protecting. With a few simple seasonal updates, you can have glowing skin in the Fall and even the Winter too!
