A New Kind of Goal Setting for 2021

Setting goals for 2021 is demanding that I take a less rigid approach. I love me some goal setting, and am increasingly compelled to rethink goal setting in a more life-affirming, soul-enriching way.

For the past few weeks I have been sharing a new approach to see how it resonates with others. My colleagues and team thought it was helpful, so I wanted to share more broadly in case there is something here that’s helpful for you too.

A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at.

First, let’s agree that setting goals is a meaningful practice for everyone.

As important as the act of goal setting can be, moving towards the goal is the real gift. Yet 92% of people quit their goals in the first few weeks. This year, instead of beating ourselves up for being such lazy quitters, we should ask ourselves how we can create goals that stick.

Hint: it has to feel good.

Everything we do is driven by the desire to feel a certain way. Without exception. And everything on our to-do lists originate in the feelings we desire.

So, how do you want to feel?

Get really clear on that. Take a moment for yourself and think of the top 3-5 feelings you want to experience TODAY.

Examples of feelings to get your juices flowing: authentic, fulfilled, joyful, grateful, supported, brave, spontaneous, centered, grounded, patient, loving, flexible, excited, inspired,

  1. Write them down.

  2. Ask yourself which activities or experiences will help you feel that way.

  3. Do those.

Then apply those feelings to your larger goals. Ask yourself if accomplishing those goals generate those feelings? The more you tap into those feelings while you are going for your goal, the more likely you’ll be to stick with it.

Use your core desired feeling to guide what you want to do, have, and experience in life

When you are clear on how you want to feel and you set about generating those feelings, you take charge of your life and your happiness.
